Description
Christchurch, a village and a parish in Monmouthshire. The villhge stands near the Usk, on the road from Newport to Chepbftow, 3 miles NE from Newport, and 1 1/2 mile SE from Caerleorl station on the G.W.R. The parish includes the hamlet fcf Caerleon-ultra-Pontem, and a portion of the hamlet of LJiswerry. There are post offices at Caerleon and Llis-werry; money order and telegraph office, Maindee, under Newport. Acreage, 5530; population of the civil parish, 914; of 'the ecclesiastical, 1211. A portion of the parish was incorporated with the borough of Newport in 1889. The living is F^ vicarage in the diocese of Llandaff. Patron, Eton College. / the church is one of the finest in the county, and has be^n built of local stone at different periods. The in-teric/r has been well restored, and was reopened in 1886. The tower was restored in 1892. In the chancel there is a flat ni(0nument of the 14th century, to which healing properties ^iised to be attributed, and of which a full account is given by Donovan ("Tour in South Wales," 1804). Limestone is found, and the parish is mostly laid down with grass. The soil is clay, sand, and lias. The parish of Maindee was cut out of the old parish of Christchurch in 1867, which in former times was very much larger than it is now. There are Primitive Methodist and Evangelist chapels. There is also a cemetery. For civil purposes Maindee is still in the parish of Christchurch,' but ecclesiastically the parishes are quite distinct.
