Rhossili or Rhossilly, a parish in Glamorgan, on the Gower coast, near Worms Head, 14 miles W of Killay station on the L. & N.W.E., and 18 W of Swansea. Post town, Reynoldston, under Swansea. Acreage, 2707, with 561 of foreshore; population of the civil parish, 285 ; of the ecclesiastical, 236. The manor was given by Fitz-Hamon to Reginald de Sully. The whole parish belongs to the family of Talbot of Margam Abbey. Rhossili Downs form part of the surface. Rhossili Bay, a slender indentation of the coast extending from Worms Head to Burry Holmes, presents great dangers to navigators, and has been the scene of some notable-shipwrecks. Rhossili is a coastguard station. A cave, called the Blowhole, is washed by the sea, and in stormy weather emits a reverberating sound audible at the distance of 7 miles. The living is a rectory in the diocese of St David's y gross value, £126 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church, dedicated to St Mary, is Norman and has been restored. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
