Description
Pentyrch, a parish in Glamorgan, near the river Taff, 2 1/2 miles SW of Walnut Tree Junction station on the Taff Vale railway, 5 NW of LIandaff, and 8 NW of Cardiff. There is a station on the Barry railway at Creigian in the parish. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Cardiff. Acreage, 3939; population, 1693. There is a parish council consisting of eleven members. The rocks include limestone, iron ore, and coal; and there are tinplate works and collieries. The Garth Mountain is a favourite spot for pic-nic parties from Cardiff. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of LIandaff ; net value, £214 with residence. Patron, alternately the Bishop of LIandaff and the Dean and Chapter. The church was erected in 1850 on the site of the previous edifice, and was restored in 1881. A district church was erected at the west end of the parish in 1889, and there are Baptist, Calvinistic Metliodist, and Congregational chapels.
