Gyffin, Carnarvonshire

Description
Gyffin, a village and a parish in Carnarvonshire. The village stands on an affluent of the river Conway, three-fourths of a mile SW of Conway. The parish includes also the townships of Bodidda, Gweredros, Llechan, and Merchlyn. Post town, Conway. Acreage, 2470; population of the civil parish, 584; of the ecclesiastical, 646. A battle was fought here in 880, between Anarawd, Prince of North Wales, and Edward, Duke of Mercia. A Cistercian abbey was founded here by Llewelyn-ap-Jorwerth, and was removed by Edward I. to Maenan. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bangor; net value, £368 with residence. Patron, the Dean of Bangor. The church was restored in 1868, and contains an ancient font. Dr Richard Davies, Bishop of St Asaph, one of the translators of the Welsh Bible, was born in the parish, as well as John Gibson, the sculptor.
