Eglwys-Cummm, Carmarthenshire

Description
Eglwys-Cummm, a parish in Carmarthenshire, near the coast, 4 miles W of Laugharne, and 7 SE of Whitland station on the G.W.R. Post town, St Clears. Acreage, 3724; population, 240. Two subterranean streams pass beneath the surface to the sea. There are ruins of two castles. The living is a rectory in the diocese of St David's; gross value, £156. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is situated on high ground, some 500 feet above the sea-level, and in a commanding position. It is of very early date, and built in the centre of an extensive earthwork or rath, which forms the present churchyard, being raised some 5 or 6 feet above the level of the adjacent ground, and surrounded as to a large part by an earthen rampart. The roof is stone-vaulted, of sharp pitch, and tradition and appearance alike suggest that it was built on a centring of earth instead of the usual wooden frame. There is an ogam stone kept in the church for preservation. The Latin inscription is-"Avitoria Filia Cunigni," in capitals.
