Description
Golcar, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in the W. R. Yorkshire. The village stands adjacent to the Manchester and Leeds railway, 8 1/2 miles W by S of Hudders-field, and has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Hnddersfield. The township includes also the village of Wellhouse, and is separated by the river Colne from Almondbury. Acreage, 1593; population, 9108. Many of the inhabitants are employed in the woollen manufacture. There are mineral spa baths in much repute. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; net yearly value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Huddersfield. The church was built in 1830, is in the Early English style, and has a tower and spire. There are Baptist, United and New Connexion Methodist chapels, and Liberal and Conservative clubs. The district is governed by a local board of 12 members.
