Escrick, East Riding

Description
Escrick, a village, a township, and a parish in the E. R. Yorkshire. The township lies on an affluent of the river Ouse, 7 miles SSE of York, and has a station on the N.E.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under York. Acreage, 4349 ; population of township, 653 ; of the ecclesiastical parish, 846. The parish contains also the township of Deighton. Lord Wenlock is the lord of the manor of Escrick, and sole landowner. Escrick Park belonged, in the time of James I., to Sir Thomas Knivet, the discoverer of the Gunpowder Plot, and gave him the title of Baron on his being raised to the peerage, and it belongs now to Lord Wenlock. The living is a rectory in the diocese of York; net value, £400 with residence. Patron, Lord Wenlock. The church is modern, and contains a beautiful stained-glass window, unveiled in 1892, presented by Mr and Mrs J. G. Menzies in memory of the late Duke of Clarence, who while stationed at York frequently visited Escrick Park, and attended the parish church.
