Description
Norton-by-Kempsey, a village and a parish in Worcestershire. The village stands 1 1/2 mile E of the river Severn, and 4 miles SSE of Worcester, and is small but picturesque. It has a station, called Norton Junction, on the G.W.R. The parish contains also the hamlets of Littleworth and Hatfield, and its post town is Worcester. Acreage, 1844; population of the civil parish, 811; of the ecclesiastical, 818. Wood Hall is the chief residence. Norton Barracks were built in 1876 for the depot of the Worcester regiment. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; net value, £250 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Worcester. The church is an ancient small edifice, has a Norman porch and a Perpendicular tower, and was almost entirely rebuilt in 1875. It contains an ancient stone font and a good reredos. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Littleworth.
