Rowde, Wiltshire

Rowde, a parish, with a village, in Wiltshire, on an affluent of the river Avon, 2 1/2 miles WNW of Devizes station on the G.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Devizes. Acreage, 2669; population of the civil parish, 1195; of the ecclesiastical, 877. For parish council purposes Rowde is divided into Rowde Within, which is included in the borough of Devizes, and Rowde Without or Rowde Proper, which has a parish council consisting of eleven members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; gross value, £270 with residence. The church was partly rebuilt in 1833, has been restored, and contains some good stained windows. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Reading and coffee rooms were erected in 1887.
