Colerne, Wiltshire

Description
Colerne, a parish in Wiltshire, 600 feet above sea level, near the Fosse Way, 2 miles NNE of Box station on the G.W.R., and 3^ WNW of Corsham. It has a post and money order office under Chippenham; telegraph office, Box. Acreage, 3928; population, 1076. The surface is hilly. There is an ancient camp on Colerne Down, another in Colerne Park, and remains of Danish fortifications at Lucknam. Remains of Roman villas were found in a field near the entrance to Lucknam Park, but they have mostly been neglected or ruthlessly destroyed. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; value, £137 with residence. Patron, New College, Oxford. The church is partly Norman, and was restored in 1875. There are Congregational, Baptist, and Methodist chapels.
