Description
Helsington, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Westmorland, near the river Kent, 3 miles SW of Oxenhoime, and 3 from Kendal station on the L. & N.W.R. Post, money order, and telegraph office, EendaL Acreage, including part of Brigsteer, 3327; population of the township, 360; of the ecclesiastical parish, 419. The manor belongs to the Howards. Sizergh Castle, the ancient seat of the Strickland family, Prizet, and Stone Cross, are chief residences. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £158 with residence. The church is ancient. There are gunpowder mills.
