Description
Compton, Little, or Compton-Parva, a parish in Warwickshire, 2 1/4 miles from the Four Shire Stone, on the Gloucestershire side of the parish, and the same distance from the Eollright Stones on the Oxfordshire side. It is 4 miles E of Moreton-in-Marsh, and 4 NW of Cbipping-Norton. It has a post office under Moreton-in-Marsh; telegraph office, Moreton-in-Marsh; money order office, Long Compton. Acreage, 1689; population, 439. The manor belonged to Tewkesbury Abbey, and was given at the dissolution to Sir Thomas Pope. The manor house is an Elizabethan structure, built with a centre and two wings; over the entrance are the Juxon arms. It was purchased by Archbishop Juxon, the chaplain of Charles I., who erected the manor house and resided here during the Commonwealth. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £160 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St Denis, was rebuilt in 1864. There are Baptist and Congregational chapels.
