Description
Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, a village, a township, and a parish in Warwickshire. The village lies on the river Avon and the Oxford Canal, in the vicinity of Watling Street, 2 miles ENE of Rugby, and has a station (Clifton Mill) on the Rugby and Stamford branch of the L. & N.W.R. It has a post and telegraph office of the name of Clifton, under Rugby; money order office, Rugby. Acreage of the township, 1677 ; population, 638. The parish contains also the township and chapelry of Brownsover and the township of Newton and Biggin. Acreage, 3659 ; population, 930. The living is a vicarage, united with the chapelry of Brownsover, in the diocese of Worcester; joint net value, £163 with residence. The church is Early English, with an embattled tower, and there is a Weseyan chapel. Carte the historian was a native. The ancient chapel at Brownsover was restored by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1877.
