Horsley, West, a village and a parish in Surrey. The" village stands about a mile from Horsley and Ockham station on the L. & S.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leatherhead. Acreage of the civil parish,. 2676; population, 601; of the ecclesiastical, 615. The manor, with West Horsley Place, belonged to Lord Berners,. the translator ofFroissart; passed to the Raleighs, and was the favourite residence of Carew Raleigh, son of Sir Walter. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; gross value, £308 with residence. The church is partly Early English, partly Perpendicular; was well restored in 1849, and reseated in 1887; comprises nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and shingled spire; has at the E end of the nave a curious carving of the Nativity, found under the flooring in 1810, and contains monuments of a Berners and a Fullerton. A mortuary chapel belonging to the manor is traditionally said to contain the head of Sir Walter Raleigh in the same grave as the remains of his son. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
