Description
Tooting Graveney, a suburban parish in Surrey, with stations on the L. & S.W.R. and L.B. & S.C.R., 7 miles from London, and 3 E of Wimbledon. It is within the county of London and the parliamentary borough of Wandsworth. It has a post office under London SW, and a police station. There are many elegant seats and villas, and some extensive nursery grounds. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester. The church of St Nicholas, rebuilt in 1833 and enlarged in 1889, is a structure of brick in the Gothic style. There are Baptist, Congregational, and Wesleyan chapels. Daniel Defoe, the author of " Robinson Crusoe," was a resident at Tooting in 1688.
