Syleham, Suffolk

Syleham, a small village and a parish in Suffolk, on thes river Waveney, which here separates Suffolk from Norfolk, 4 miles SW of Harleston station on the Waveney Valley section of the G.E.R. There is a post office under Scole; money order office, Brockdish; telegraph office, Hoxne. Acreage, 1615; population, 234. The manor belongs to the baronet family of Adair. Syleham Hall, formerly a seat of the De la Poles, Earls of Suffolk, belongs now to the Fairbrother family. There is a large mill, using both water and steam power for the manufacture of linen drabbets. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £57 with residence. The church is a very ancient building of flint and stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, S porch, and a round western embattled tower.
