Stradbroke, Suffolk

Description
Stradbroke, a small town and a large parish in Suffolk. The town stands 6 1/2 miles E of Eye station on the G.E.R., and 9 N from Framlingham. It is a seat of petty sessions, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Wickham Market. It formerly had a weekly market on Monday, and a cattle fair on the third Monday of June. The parish comprises 3796 acres; population, 1069. There is a parish council consisting of fifteen members. The Hoxne Union Workhouse (now closed) stands within the parish. Stradbroke and Stubcroft manor belongs to Lady Bateman, and the manor of Shelton Hall-with-Wilby belongs to the Corbett family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £529 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Norwich. The church, which stands in the centre of the town, is a building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, N and S porches, and a fine lofty embattled western tower with eight bells. There is a Baptist chapel.
