Description
Palgrave, a pleasant village and a parish in Suffolk. The village stands near the boundary with Norfolk, 1 mile SW of Diss station on the G.E.R., and 4 miles NW of Eye, and has a post and money order office under Diss; telegraph office, Diss. The parish comprises 1504 acres; population, 776. There is a parish council consisting of eleven members. The manor belongs to Lady Bateman. St John's is a mansion standing in a small park near the village. The living is. a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £280 with residence, in the gift of Lady Bateman. The church is an ancient building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style; consists of nave and chancel, with N and S porches, and an embattled western tower; and contains the remains of T. Martin the antiquary, and monuments to the Harrisons. There are a town estate charity worth about £30 a year, and a charity derived from £1100 invested in stocks, which is divided between the school and the poor.
