Description
Metfield, a village and a parish in Suffolk. The village is 2 1/2 miles SE of the river Waveney, at the boundary with Suffolk, and 4 1/2 NE by E of Harleston railway station, and has a post and money order office under Harleston; telegraph office, Fressingfield. The parish comprises 2338 acres; population of the civil parish, 524; of the ecclesiastical, 500. The manor, with Metfield Hall-which is now a farmhouse- belongs to the Tayler family. The living is a donative in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £80 with residence. The church is an ancient building of flint and stone in the Norman style, and consists of nave and chancel with a tower. There are a Primitive Methodist chapel, an endowed national school, and some small charities.
