Laxfield, Suffolk

Laxfield, a village and a large parish in Suffolk. The village stands near the river Biythe, 6 3/4 miles N of Framling-ham station on the G.E.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Framlingham (B.S.O.) It was once a, market-town, and had fairs on 12 May and 25 Oct., but the market and fairs have become obsolete. Acreage of parish, 3719; population, 905. Some of the property belonged in old times to Leiston Abbey and Eye Priory. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £147 with residence. The church is a handsome building of flint and stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles. It has some ancient stained glass, some good wood-carving, and a very large ancient octagonal font. There is a Baptist chapel, and there are charities worth about £270 a year.
