Description
Kirton, a village and a parish in Suffolk. The village stands nearly midway between the Deben and the Orwell, 3 1/2 miles from the coast, 4 N by W from Felixstone station on the G.E.R., and 9 SE of Ipswich, and has a post office under Ipswich; money order office, Trimley; telegraph office, Walton. Acreage, 1854; population, 541. There are two manors, one of which belongs to the Pretymans and the other to the Laws families. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; net value,, £220 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is a building of rubble in the Decorated style with a stone tower, and contains a very ancient piscina. There are a Wesleyan chapel and 3 1/2 acres of poor's land. Large quantities of coprolites have been found in the parish.
