Description
Kersey, a village and a parish in Suffolk. The village stands in a pleasant valley 2 1/2 miles NW from Hadleigh station on the G.E.R. It has a post office under Ipswich; money order and telegraph office, Hadleigh. Acreage, 1510; population, 482. An Augustinian priory anciently stood here, which was given in the time of Henry VI. to King's College, Cambridge. The Priory here is the chief residence, and in its grounds are some remains of the ancient church. The manor belongs to King's College, Cambridge. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; gross yearly value, c£200. Patron, King's College, Cambridge. The church, dedicated to St Mary, is an ancient building of flint in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, with a fine lofty tower. There are a few small charities. Kershope Foot, a railway station adjacent to the boundary between Cumberland and Scotland on the North British railway, at the confluence of the Kershope and the Liddel, 11 1/2 miles NE by N of Longtown.
