Exning or Ixning, a village and a parish in Suffolk. The village stands in an isolated part of the county, near Icknield Street, 1 1/4 mile from Burwell station on the G.E.R., and 2 miles NW from Newmarket, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Newmarket. The parish contains also the Newmarket workhouse. Acreage, 4987 ; population of the civil parish, 2757; of the ecclesiastical parish of St Agnes, 227 ; of St Martin with Landwade, 2420. The family of Shepherd had formerly a seat here, and St Etheldreda, the founder of Ely Abbey, was a native. Exning Hall is the residence of the Baird family. The living is a vicarage, united with Landwade, in the diocese of Ely ; net value, £320 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury. The church, which is an ancient building of flint and stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, has a tower, contains remains of brasses and armorial bearings, and is good. St Philip's Church, erected in 1894, is a mission church in St Martin's parish, about half a mile from Newmarket. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Shepherd's charity for the poor has £100, and other charities have £20. There is an estate, the proceeds of which are devoted to the church. The village stands 1 1/2 mile N by E of Droxford, and 5 NE of Bishops Waltham station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town, Bishops Waltham. The parish comprises 3567 acres; population of the civil parish, 285; of the ecclesiastical, 238. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; net value, c£with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Winchester. The church was rebuilt in 1847, and is in the Early English style.
