Description
Shugborough, a hamlet in Colwich parish, Staffordshire, 5 1/4 miles ESE of Stafford. The manor belonged in the time of Henry III. to the Astons, and passed to the Tixals. Shugborough Hall is the seat of the Earl of Lichfield. R is a noble mansion in the Italian style, situated at the angle formed by the confluence of the rivers Trent and Sowe. It was visited in 1832 by the Princess Victoria, and stands in grounds containing a Chinese tower, a memorial pillar to Anson, and remains of an ancient palace of the bishops of Lichfield.
