Hammerwich, Staffordshire

Hammerwich, a village and a chapelry in Lichfield St Michael parish, Staffordshire, on the south-eastern verge of Cannock Chase, on the Wyrley and Essington Canal, 3 miles WSW of Lichfield, with a station on the Walsall, Lichfield, and Derby branch of the L. & N.W.R. Post town, Lichfield. Population of the ecclesiastical district, 1573. The manor belongs to the Marquis of Anglesey. Portion of the chapelry was made a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1860. Population, 611. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lichfield; gross value, £283. The church was rebuilt in 1873. A mausoleum of the Ashmalls is near the church. A cottage hospital was erected in 1882.
