Description
Petherton, South, a small town and a parish in Somerset. The town stands near the Fosse Way and the river Parret, 3 miles SW by W of Martock station on the G.W.R., and 4 1/2 N by W of Crewkerne, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ilminster. It has a bank, hotel, police station, church, and an institute with reading-rooms. A sheep fair is held on 6 July. The parish includes the tithings of Compton Durvill, South Harp, and Over Stratton. Acreage, 3494; population, 2250. Yeabridge House, King Ina's Palace, and Bridge House are chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; net value, £320 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Bristol. The church is cruciform, and variously Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular; has a central octagonal tower; was restored in 1861; and contains three brasses. There are Congregational, Wesleyan, and Bible Christian chapels.
