Description
Crowcombe, a village and a parish in Somerset. The village stands under the Quantock Hills, 7 miles NNE of Wiveliscombe and 11 from Taunton, with a station on the G.W.R., 167 miles from London, a post and money order office under Taunton, a telegraph office at the railway station, ^nd an inn. It was formerly a market-town and borough. It is a neat and romantic place, and commands a fine view to the west. The parish includes also the hamlet of Flaxpool. Acreage, 3271; population, 418. The manor belonged formerly to the Biccombes. Crowcombe Court, the seat of the Carew family, now represented by the Hon. Mrs Trollope, is a red brick mansion with portico and wings ; stands amid highly picturesque grounds; and contains a fine collection of paintings and curiosities. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells; value, £321 with residence. The church is Later English and retains all the original finely-carved benches. It has an embattled tower, which was formerly surmounted by a spire, and contains monuments of the Carews. There is an endowed school. A sculptured cross is in the churchyard, and another is in the village.
