Description
Croston, a village, a township, and a parish in Lancashire. The village stands on the river Yarrow, and has a station on the L. & Y.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Preston. It was once a market-town. The township comprises 2361 acres; population, 2034. The parish includes the townships of Ulnes Walton, Bretherton, and Mawdesley-with-Bispham, and the hamlet of Hanging Bridge. Croston Hall is the seat of the De Trafford family. Several adjacent parishes were formerly parts of this. the living is a rectory in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, c£1093 with residence. The church is ancient and good. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and Roman Catholic-chapels.
