Description
Croscombe, a village and a parish in Somerset. The village stands on the Sheppy, a tributary of the Brue, 2 miles WNW of Shepton-Mallefc station on the G.W.R., has a post office under Wells ; money order and telegraph office, Shepton-Mallet. It was once a market-town, and had a priory, some remains of which still exist in the inn. There is a cross in the centre of the village. The parish comprises 1853 acres; population of the civil parish, 670; of the ecclesiastical, 586. Maesbury Ring, an entrenched area of 6 acres, on the Mendip Hills and on the line of the Fosse Way, is near. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells; val.ue, £156 with residence. The church is Perpendicular English, with embattled parapet, and a fine tower and spire. It contains a large amount of fine woodwork, including a magnificent pulpit bearing Bishop Lake's arms and the date 1616, and a chancel-screen rising nearly to the roof. It also contains three beautiful stained-glass windows. There is a Baptist chapel.
