Description
Blagdon, a parish in Somersetshire. The parish lies under the Mendip Hills, 6 miles NE by E of Axbridge station on the G.W.R., and has a post, money order, and telegraph office (R.S.O.), and a fair on the last Friday of Aug. Acreage, 3133; population of the civil parish, 901; of the ecclesiastical, 939. There is a public village hall, used on Sundays as a Baptist chapel. Some ruins at Reghillbury are said to be remains of an ancient palace. Lapis calaminaris is found. In the village is an ornamental sheet of water. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; gross value, £419 with residence. The church is modern, and there is a Methodist chapel. Dr John Langhorne was rector.
