Description

Allerton-Chapel or Chapel-Allerton, a parish in Somerset, 3 miles from Axbridge station on the G.W.R. It has a post office under Weston-super-Mare; money order and telegraph office, Wedmore. Acreage, 1437; population of civil parish, 318; of the ecclesiastical, 232. It contains the hamlets of Ashton, Stone-Allerton, and Washbrook. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells ; value, £270. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Wells. The church was restored in 1860. In this parish stood " the hundred stone," which marked the hundred of Bempstone, and portions of it still exist.
