Description
Woore, a village, a township, and a parish in Salop. The village lies 1 mile NW of Pipegate station on the North Staffordshire railway, and 7 miles NE of Market Drayton, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Newcastle. The civil parish comprises the townships of Woore, Gravenhanger, Dorrington, and Bearston. Acreage, 4457; population, 830. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1842, and is distinct from the civil parish, being partly in Salop and partly in Staffordshire, and includes the whole of the townships of Woore, Aston, and Gravenhanger, and part of Dorrington. Population, 870. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; gross value, £124 with residence. Patron, Lord Crewe. The church was built in 1830. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels.
