Stanton Lacy, Shropshire

Stanton Lacy, a township and a parish in Salop. The township lies on the river Corve, 1 mile N of Bromfield station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford Joint (L. & N.W. and G.W.) railway, and 3 miles NNW of Ludlow. It has a post office under Bromfield (R.S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Bromfield. The parish contains also Downton and Hopton, Lower Hayton and Upper Hayton townships. Acreage, 5745; population of the civil parish, 640; of the ecclesiastical, 721. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. Downton Hall is the seat of the baronet family of Rouse-Boughton. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, Lord Windsor. The church is a very ancient cruciform edifice, dating originally from the Saxon period. It has been restored, And contains a richly carved reredos, a pulpit of Caen stone, two piscinas, a font of the 14th century, carved oak stalls, and stained windows. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.
