Quatford, Shropshire

Description
Quatford, a village and a parish in Salop. The village stands on the river Severn, 2 miles SE of Bridgnorth, and has a post office under Bridgnorth; money order and telegraph office, Bridgnorth. The parish, including Eardington township, comprises 1824 acres; population, 487. Under the Local Government Act of 1894 Eardington township became a separate civil parish, and has a parish council consisting of seven members. A fortress was built at Quatford in 913 by Ethelfleda, and subsequently a collegiate church by Adelisa, wife of Earl Roger de Montgomery. Earl Roger built, in 1085, a castle, and some traces of its site remain. Quatford Castle is a modern mansion situated on an eminence commanding extensive views. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford; net value, £173 with residence. The church retains portions of the original Norman edifice, but is chiefly of the 18th century. It contains an ancient font and some incised slabs. It was enlarged in 1857.
