Description
Stretton, a village and a parish in Rutland, 5 1/2 miles W by S of Little Bytham station on the G.N.R., and 8 NNW from Stamford, with a post office under Oakham; money order and telegraph office, Cottesmore. Acreage, 1976; population, 194. The manor, with most of the land, belongs to the Earl of Ancaster. Stocken Hall is a country mansion standing amidst some thick woods near the boundary of the county with Lincolnshire. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £220 with residence. The church is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, Norman, Early English, and Jacobean.
