Cottesmore, a village and a parish in Rutland. The village stands 2 miles E of Ashwell station on the M.R., and 4 1/2 NE of Oakham. The parish includes also the hamlet of Barrow, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Oakham. Acreage, 2504; population of the civil parish, 431; of the ecclesiastical, 536. The living is a rectory united with Barrow, in the diocese of Peterborough; joint yearly value, £500 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Gainsborough. The church is a fine building of stone in the Early English style. Cottesmore Hall is the residence of the Dowager Countess of Lonsdale. The famous Cottesmore Hunt takes its name from this place, but the kennels are now in the parish of Langham.
