Description
Swinbrook, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire, on the northern banks of the Windrush, 2 miles E of Burford, 5 NW from Bampton station on the Oxford, Witney, and Fairford section of the G.W.R., and 6 1/2 NW from Witney. There is a post office under Burford (R.S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Burford. Acreage, 1714; population of the civil parish, 216; of the ecclesiastical, with Widford, 238. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor, with most of the land, belongs to the Freeman-Mitford family. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Widford; joint gross value, £244 with residence. The church is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and an embattled tower. It contains some ancient brasses and tombs. There are a Primitive Methodist chapel, an endowed school, and several charities.
