Oxton, Nottinghamshire

Description
Oxton, a village and a parish in Notts. The village stands in Sherwood Forest, near Dover beck, 4 1/2 miles NW of Lowdham railway station, and 5 WSW of Southwell, and has a post office under Southwell; money order office, Epperstone; telegraph office, Southwell. The parish comprises 3618 acres; population, 439. The manor, with Oxton Hall, belongs to the Sherbrooke family. There are two Roman camps and three barrows, one of which, 53 feet in diameter, was opened in 1789. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £258 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is an old stone building in the Early Decorated style, with a low tower, and contains a stone effigy of a female. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a Church of England endowed school with £16 a year, rebuilt in 1870. The parish is principally agricultural.
