Clowne, a village and a parish in Derbyshire, 2 1/2 miles from Cresswell station on the M.R., and 8 ENE of Chesterfield, with a post, money order, and telegraph office under Chesterfield, and a goods railway station. Acreage, 1913; population, 2349. The Duke of Portland is lord of the manor. Limestone is quarried, and the Southgate Colliery is in this parish. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £228 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church has Norman portions, and is good. There are a reading-room and library, which were established in 1874. A market for live stock is held fortnightly on Tuesday.
