Description
Bilsthorpe, a small village and a parish in Notts, in Sherwood Forest, 5 1/2 miles NW of Southwell, and 2 from Farnsfield station on the M.R. Post town, Southwell. Acreage of parish, 1580; population, 203. The manor was given by William the Conqueror to G. de Gaunt, and passed to the Foljambes, the Broughtons, and others. The old manor-house stood near the church, and is said to have given shelter for a short time to Charles I. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; gross value, £395 with residence. The church is small, and contains several interesting monuments. The lower part of the font is Norman.
