Description
Sulgrave, a large village and a parish in Northamptonshire. The village stands 7 1/2 miles NE from Banbury, and 2 W by N from Helmdon station on the Northampton and Banbury Junction railway. It has a post and money order office under Banbury; telegraph office, Thorpe Mandeville. The parish comprises 2035 acres; population, 426. The manor belongs to the Reynell-Pack family. A tumulus, called Barrow Hill, is about a mile N of the village, and commands an extensive view. The river Tove has its source in this parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £240 with residence. The church, which was restored in 1885 at a cost of £1900, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, S aisle, N and S porches, and an embattled western tower. It contains some memorials of the Washington family, ancestors of George Washington, first president of the United States of America. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, and some small charities.
