Description
Sprowston, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands 2 miles N by E of Norwich, which is the nearest railway station; is straggling, and more than a mile long; contains some handsome residences; and has a post and money order office under Norwich; telegraph office, Old Catton. The parish comprises 2632 acres; population, 2165. There are two corn-mills. The manor, with Sprowston Hall, belongs to the Gurney family. Sprowston Hall is a good modern mansion of red brick. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £254 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church is an ancient building of flint and stone which has been much altered by repairs. It has a stained E window and some ancient tombs and monuments. A chapel of ease was erected in 1885 at a cost of about £2300. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
