Shouldham, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, 5 miles SE from Magdalen Road Junction station on the Ely and Lynn section of the G.E.R., and 6 NE of Downham Market It has a post and money order office under Downham; telegraph office, Watlington. There are cattle fairs on 19 Sept. and 11 Oct. Acreage, 3965; population of the civil parish, 524; of the ecclesiastical, with Shouldham Thorpe, 765. The manor belongs to the Hare family. A Gilbertine priory was founded in the time of Richard I. by the Earl of Essex. The living is a vicarage, united with Shouldham Thorpe, in the diocese of Norwich; joint net value, £267 with residence. The church, which was restored in 1870, is an edifice of flint and stone in the Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular styles. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
