Shelton, Norfolk

Shelton, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, 5 miles E by S of Forncett junction station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the G.E.R., and 5 1/2 N by W of Harleston. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Long Stratton. Acreage, 1314; population of the civil parish, 202; of the ecclesiastical, with Hardwick, 385. Shelton Hall, an ancient moated mansion, is now a farmhouse. The manor belongs to the Holmes family. The living is a rectory, united with Hardwick, in the diocese of Norwich; joint net value, £298 with residence. The church is an ancient edifice of brick in the Perpendicular style, containing some ancient and interesting tombs and monuments, and some good stained windows. A curious feature of the church is that the roof forms the home of several colonies of bees, and it is said that bees have swarmed here for upwards of a century.
