Description
Rollesby, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands 4 1/2 miles NE of Acle, 7 1/2 NW of Yarmouth, and 1 1/2 mile SW of Martham station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint railway. It is a seat of petty sessions and has a post office under Great Yarmouth; money order and. telegraph office, Martham. The parish comprises 1689 acres; population, 570. The workhouse for the East and West Flegg incorporation-a building of brick erected in 1777 to hold 400 inmates-stands within the parish. A fine sheet of water of about 200 acres, situated between Filby and Ormesby Broads, is known as Rollesby Broad, The manor belongs to the Ensor family. Rollesby Hall is a chief residence. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £495 with residence. The church, which stands on rising-ground, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, N porch, and an embattled western tower. It has some ancient tombs and some good stained windows. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. T. Goodwin, the chaplain of Cromwell, was a native.
