Description
Lessingham, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands near the coast, 3 miles NNE of Stalham, 9 ESE of North Walsham, and 17 1/2 NE of Norwich. Stalham station is on the Melton Constable and Yarmouth branch of the Midland and Great Northern Joint railway, and there is a post office under Norwich; money order and telegraph office, Stalham. Acreage, 641; population, 182. The manor belongs to King's College, Cambridge. Before the Norman Conquest it belonged to Harold; afterwards it was given to the abbey of Bee in Normandy, and was administered as a cell under the alien priory of Ogbonrne in Wilts. It was consequently seized by Henry VI., and given to King's College, Cambridge. The living is a rectory, annexed to the rectory of Hempstead, in the diocese of Norwich; joint net value, £375 with residence, in the gift of King's College, Cambridge. The church, an ancient building of flint and stone, has been recently restored. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
