Description
Hevingham, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands 3 miles W from Buxton Lamas station on the G.E.R., 3 S by E from Aylsham, and 8 N from Norwich, is irregularly built, and has a post and money order office under Norwich; telegraph office, Buxton Lamas. The parish comprises 2881 acres; population, 760. Bippon Hall is a mansion of brick in the Elizabethan style. A palace of the Bishops of Norwich anciently stood at the village, but has completely disappeared. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £395 with residence. The church, a large building of flint in the Gothic style, has a fine porch and an embattled tower, and contains an ancient font. It was renovated in 1894, the principal work being the restoration of the 17th-century roof. There are Baptist, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels, a fuel allotment of 146 acres, and some small charities.
