Feltwell, Norfolk

Feltwell, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands near the Sams Cut in the Fen, 3 miles N by E of Laken-heath station on the G.E.R., and 5 1/4 NW of Brandon. It is large and neatly built, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Brandon. The parish comprises 13,181 acres, about half of which is fen. Population of the civil parish, 1557 ; of the ecclesiastical, 1203. The upland tracts were enclosed in 1815. Feltwell Lodge, Feltwell Hall, and East Hall are chief residences. The parish comprises two quondam parishes, St Mary and St Nicholas, and is sometimes called Feltwell St Mary and St Nicholas. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £1187 with residence. Patron, alternately the Lord Chancellor and the Bishop of Norwich. St Mary's Church consists of nave, chancel, and aisles, with massive square tower; has a brass of 1482, and was altered and enlarged in 1864. St Nicholas Church is ancient, and serves now as a cemetery chapel. There are chapels for Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists. Mundeford's Free Schools and Almshouses have about £430, and there are other charities, including a fuel allotment of 360 acres. A fair is held on 20 Nov.
