Description
Emneth, a village and a parish in Norfolk, on the verge of the county, on the Wisbech Canal, 2 1/2 miles SE of Wisbech, with a station on the G.E.R., and also a steam tramway from Wisbech with a station called Elm Bridge. There is a post office under Wisbech; money order and telegraph office, Elm. Acreage, 3591; population, 922. The surface is fenny. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; net value, £247 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Ely. The church is ancient, has a square tower, and contains an altar-tomb of Sir Thomas Hewar. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan Reformer chapels. Inglethorpe Hall is a chief residence.
