Description
Wilsford, a parish in Lincolnshire, 1 1/2 mile ESE of Ancaster station on the G.N.R., and 4 1/2 miles SW by W of Sleaford. It includes part of Ancaster village, which has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Grantham. Acreage, 3007; population, 687. A Benedictine priory, a cell to Bee Abbey in Normandy, was founded here in the time of King Stephen, and went first to Bourn Abbey, next to the Brandons. The quarries here produce the fine freestone known as Aucaster stone. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £510. The church is a fine building in various styles of architecture, and has been well restored. There are a Primitive Methodist chapel and a good school.
